This policy explains what personal information The Recipe Atlas ("we", "us") collects when you visit therecipeatlas.com, why we collect it, who we share it with, and the rights you have over it.

Who we are

The Recipe Atlas is an independent recipe publication. For the purposes of UK and EU data protection law, we are the data controller for the personal data described in this policy. You can reach us about privacy at privacy@therecipeatlas.com.

The short version

We collect very little: an email address if you subscribe, and standard technical data that every website receives.
We use cookies for basic site function; our advertising and analytics partners may set their own cookies, and we ask for consent where the law requires it.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not build profiles of you for our own marketing.
You can ask us for a copy of your data, correct it, or delete it at any time by emailing privacy@therecipeatlas.com.

Information we collect

Information you give us

Newsletter subscription: the email address you enter. It is used only to send the newsletter you asked for; every email includes an unsubscribe link.
Messages you send us: your email address and whatever you write, when you contact us through the contact page or by email.

Information collected automatically

Technical data: IP address, browser type and version, device type, operating system, approximate location derived from your IP address, and the pages you request.
Usage data: how you arrived at the site (for example, a search engine or a referring link) and which pages you read, collected in aggregate.

We do not ask for your name, phone number, payment details, or any special category of personal data, and we do not create user accounts.

How we use information

To operate the site and deliver the pages you request reliably and securely.
To send the newsletter to subscribers, and to respond when you contact us.
To understand, in aggregate, which recipes and pages are useful, so we can improve coverage.
To display advertising that funds the site, and to measure whether those ads performed.
To detect abuse, prevent fraud, and meet our legal obligations.

Our legal bases

Where the UK GDPR or EU GDPR applies, we rely on these legal bases for processing:

Consent — for the newsletter, for non-essential cookies, and for personalised advertising. You can withdraw consent at any time.
Legitimate interests — to keep the site secure, understand aggregate usage, and support advertising that keeps our recipes free to read. We balance these interests against your rights.
Legal obligation — where we must retain or disclose information to comply with the law.

Cookies and similar technologies

Cookies are small text files placed on your device. We use them, and allow selected partners to use them, for three purposes:

Essential: remembering your cookie choices and keeping the site working. These do not require consent.
Analytics: understanding aggregate traffic and usage patterns.
Advertising: measuring ad performance and, where you consent, limiting repetition and tailoring ads.

Advertising and analytics

The Recipe Atlas is funded by advertising. We work with third-party advertising and analytics providers who may set cookies or similar identifiers, process your IP address, and receive information about the pages and ads you interact with. These partners act as independent controllers for their own processing and have their own privacy policies, which we link to in the consent tool where they apply.

You can limit interest-based advertising through your device settings and through industry tools such as youronlinechoices.com (EU/UK) and optout.aboutads.info (US).

We share personal information only in these situations:

Service providers — newsletter delivery, hosting, CDN, and analytics providers who process data on our instructions.
Advertising partners — as described above, where ads are served on the site.
Legal requirements — when we are required to disclose information by law or to protect our rights, users, or the public.
Business changes — if the site or its assets are transferred, subscriber data may transfer with them, subject to this policy.

We do not sell your personal information.

How long we keep information

Newsletter email addresses are kept until you unsubscribe, plus a short period to honour the request.
Contact messages are kept for up to 24 months so we can follow up, then deleted.
Server and analytics logs are kept for a limited period, typically up to 14 months, then deleted or aggregated.

Your privacy rights

If you are in the UK, the EEA, or another jurisdiction with similar laws, you have the right to:

Access the personal data we hold about you.
Correct data that is inaccurate or incomplete.
Delete your data where there is no continuing legal basis to keep it.
Restrict or object to processing, including a right to object to direct marketing at any time.
Portability — receive the data you gave us in a structured, machine-readable format.
Withdraw consent at any time, without affecting processing already carried out.

If you are a California resident, you also have the right to know what we collect, to request deletion or correction, and to opt out of the "sale" or "sharing" of personal information — we do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined by the CCPA/CPRA.

To exercise any right, email privacy@therecipeatlas.com. We respond within 30 days (or as required by local law) and never charge a fee for a reasonable request. If you believe we have handled your data unlawfully, you can complain to your local supervisory authority — in the UK, the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.

Children's privacy

The Recipe Atlas is written for a general audience and is not directed at children under 16. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

International transfers

Some of our service providers operate outside the UK and EEA, including in the United States. Where personal data is transferred internationally, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as the UK International Data Transfer Addendum or the EU Standard Contractual Clauses with the provider.

How we protect information

The site is served over HTTPS, access to subscriber data is restricted to those who need it, and we keep the data we hold to a minimum. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your information.

Links to other sites

Our pages may link to third-party sites, including retailer and reference sources. We are not responsible for their privacy practices; review the privacy policy of any site you visit.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the site or the law changes. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page always reflects the current version, and material changes will be highlighted on the site. Continued use of the site after an update means you accept the revised policy.
